A Living Tradition of Art, Culture & Community

At La Escapadita, we believe travel is at its most powerful when it connects people — to place, to culture, and to stories that have been carried across generations. Few experiences embody this philosophy more beautifully than our Boruca Mask Painting Workshops, led by Master Artisan Randall Fernández.

What began as a single intimate workshop has quickly grown into one of our most meaningful cultural events — selling out with limited spaces and drawing participants from Costa Rica and around the world who are eager to experience something real, hands-on, and deeply rooted in tradition.

The Story Behind the Masks

Boruca masks are far more than decorative art. Originating from the Boruca Indigenous community in southern Costa Rica, these masks play a central role in the Danza de los Diablitos (Dance of the Little Devils) — a powerful annual ceremony that tells the story of resistance, resilience, and cultural survival.

Every shape, color, symbol, and expression carved into a Boruca mask carries meaning. Jaguars, devils, spirits, and animals come alive through intricate patterns that reflect nature, mythology, and identity. Traditionally hand-carved from balsa wood and painted by skilled artisans, no two masks are ever the same — each is a singular expression of the artist’s vision and heritage.

Meet the Artist: Randall Fernández

At the heart of these workshops is Randall Fernández, a respected Boruca master artisan whose work is recognized for its precision, symbolism, and unmistakable soul. Randall doesn’t simply teach technique — he shares stories, context, and the cultural responsibility that comes with working in this tradition.

Participants are guided step-by-step through the painting process using authentic Boruca masks created by Randall himself. Every brushstroke becomes an act of learning and respect, transforming the experience from a workshop into a cultural exchange.

What to Expect at the Workshop

These workshops are intentionally small and intimate, typically limited to 10–12 participants, allowing for meaningful interaction and personalized guidance.

During the experience, guests can expect to:

  • Learn the history and symbolism behind Boruca masks
  • Paint an authentic, hand-crafted Boruca mask
  • Work directly alongside a master artisan
  • Enjoy a relaxed, welcoming environment surrounded by nature
  • Connect with fellow participants through shared creativity

No prior art experience is required — just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to slow down and create.

Why La Escapadita?

Nestled in Esterillos Centro, La Escapadita has become a gathering place for culture, art, and community on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast. Our space is designed to feel like a home — relaxed, inspiring, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Hosting Boruca workshops here is a natural extension of our mission:

Whether you’re a traveler seeking an authentic cultural experience, a local resident looking to reconnect with Costa Rica’s roots, or an art lover drawn to traditional craftsmanship, these workshops offer something rare and meaningful.

A Living, Growing Tradition

Due to overwhelming interest, additional workshop dates are often added — and they tend to fill quickly. While each event is unique, the spirit remains the same: honoring tradition, supporting indigenous artistry, and creating unforgettable shared experiences.
